EYFS Activities To Improve Children's Numerical Ability

Info

There is no doubt that online teaching India has gained much popularity. Children love to learn things online as online learning is fun. In online learning, children can find various study materials which support their learning.

But children of small age groups (0-5) mostly learn things through experiences and playful activities. So! To support their learning, EYFS is there.

EYFS stands for the early year's foundation stage and provides a better and secure future for the children. It works on the overall development of the children, be it physical, social, or emotional. For children starting their education, there are some fundamental standards by EYFS, which everyone must follow. They focus on the child's development rate at every stage and maintain a track record. Keeping a track record will help identify the weak areas of the children and make improvements according to it. It guides kids from the age of 0 to 5.

During their growth period, children learn many things and get inspired by things they see around them. It is the phase where they decide what they want to become in the future. The things they learn and the values they get to become the base of their future, and when children learn things through playful activities, this is known as EYFS activities. Through EYFS activities, children acquire knowledge that even books cannot provide them.

When it comes to subjects, every subject is equally important, and one among them is math. We teach kids about alphabets and numbers. So! when it comes to numbers, there is nothing better than EYFS math activities.

Number Book- kids have a habit of collecting things they like. So! Teachers/ parents can ask children to arrange and count the collected stuff in this activity and maintain a number book. It will help to increase their curiosity regarding numbers. Also, they will learn number counting, shapes, and to arrange similar things in order.

Story Time- Children love to listen to bedtime stories. Therefore this activity might be a fun activity for kids. In this act, the story narration is unique, and end of the story, some mystery problem is there for children to solve. Children between the age of 4-5 can play this activity. This activity is full of fun yet gives a chance to learn and develop skills like reasoning, numerical, language ability, etc. Also, they will learn things like counting, addition, and subtraction.

Building Blocks- In this activity, children make giant towers with the help of arranging blocks together. Playing this blocking activity helps children learn about different shapes, counting while setting the blocks and positions (right, left, top and bottom). The best part of building blocks is that kids can play them with teachers and parents.

Number Songs- kids' love for music is not new. Every child reacts to music, be it dew months old or 5 years old. So, to help children learn numbers, the song can be the best alternative. Make them sing those songs which include numbers in them. Playing this activity, children learn about different numbers, countings, positional languages (next, previous, etc.)

What is in the Bag? It is a fun activity in which children have to guess what is in the bag by putting their hands into it. This activity helps kids to learn about different shapes and counting.

Outdoor Math- Nature is our best friend and can be the best source of learning. Parents/ teachers can take children outside to places like gardens or nurseries and ask them to collect things of their interest. Also, you can ask them to weigh the organized things. With this activity, children can learn a new concept of weight and mass. They also learn about shapes, counting, grouping and comparison, and the difference between shapes and sizes.

Final Words

As math is an essential subject that has uses in every stage of life. So! Having proper knowledge of it is very important, and learning math starts at an early age. So! These EYFS playful activities will help kids gain math basics like addition, subtraction, comparison, shapes, grouping, weight and mass, arranging, counting, etc.
