Five physical filtration methods for compressed air filters

The effective filtration of compressed air filters is divided into five stages, each of which is effective in removing specific contaminants of varying size and collected by the various fibres in the filter media, which are captured and coalesced into larger droplets that are transferred through the media and then discharged.

  1. Gravity settling

  Generally only works with larger particles (at least 2 microns in size) and is usually only effective at low flow rates, where the particles are large enough to receive the influence of gravity and are therefore captured by the fibres as they flow through the flow path.

  2. Inertial impact

  Small particles (usually less than 2 microns in size) pass through the surface of the filter media, but cannot pass through the curved flow paths within the media and are therefore captured by the fibres, in this case with inertial impact.

  3. Direct interception

  If the particle size is larger than the average pore size of the filter media (approximately 0.1 microns), the particles will directly hit the surface of the fibre matrix, the compressed air filter cartridge uses a glass fibre filter media with an average fibre diameter of 0.5 microns.

  4. Diffusion (Brownian motion)

  It has been proven that very small particles (particle size less than 0.1-0.2 micron) move in a very random and irregular way in the air stream, and if the particles are small enough, their movement is often very violent, which then increases the impact on the avant-garde matrix.

  5. Static electricity

  Particles can be deposited by electrostatic deposition if the charge on the particles and the filter is sufficiently strong to attract the particles to the filter surface, and the electrostatic trapping mechanism is complementary to other trapping mechanisms, particularly the interception and diffusion mechanisms.
