Ovulation is when a female’s body releases an egg from the ovary so that sperm can fertilize it to complete the reproduction process effectively. However, to achieve success in getting pregnant successfully, the quality of the produced eggs must be essential as it is a part of the menstrual cycle that women experience in the puberty phase until it gets stopped in the menopause phase.
Hence, in this article, we will cover all the essential details regarding ovulation, its signs and symptoms, and how long it lasts.
Ovulation is the state in which a matured egg is released from one of the ovaries and pushed down to the fallopian tubes to reach the uterus. At the same time, if a sperm becomes able to fertilize an egg, then the resulting form (embryo) implants itself into the uterine lining so that a source can get nourishment from there and grow as a fetus. However, if the produced egg doesn’t reach its destination and does not get fertilized, then it disintegrates into the uterine lining and sheds during the menstruation cycle.
Moreover, ovulation is not just an ordinary hormonal change in a woman’s life; instead, it is a rather complex process as, during your menstrual cycle, multiple follicles start to mature, and the one that begins to grow faster and become dominant, others get released when you ovulate.
The ovulation process lasts almost a single day. In this, the body triggers the discharge of an egg from the ovaries. And when the eggs start to travel from the ovaries, passing through the fallopian tubes to the uterus, they only stay operational for a day.
And contrary to that, sperm can live for up to five days in the uterus and the fallopian tubes. Hence, simplifying it more clearly, a woman has five days to get pregnant after having intercourse at ovulation.
During ovulation, the woman’s body produces high amounts of estrogen. Thus, the increased estrogen level stimulates the hormone to release a mature egg from the ovary so that it can travel productively to the uterus and get implanted into the uterine lining. Also, it should be acknowledged that the estrogen hormone also thickens the uterine lining so it can adequately implant an embryo.
The most observant ovulation symptoms faced by millions of women are-
1. Cervical fluid or vaginal discharge
2. Change into the cervix position
3. A slight decrease in the body’s temperature
4. Breast tenderness
5. Light spotting
6. Increased sex drive
7. Escalated sense of smell, taste, or vision
8. Pain on one side of the pelvis
Ovulation is the main component to initiate the fertility process. A woman gets pregnant when she has had intercourse just before the time of ovulation. As sperm remain alive in a woman’s body for 5 days and it is efficacious to say that a woman can get pregnant after days of having sex.
When an ovulation process fails, it is known as ovulation disorder and leads to female infertility. It occurs due to poor health conditions or a change in the hormonal disorder, especially when a woman suffers from-
. Polycystic ovarian syndrome ( PCOS)
. Amenorrhoea ( when periods come to a halt due to excessive exercise or an eating disorder)
. Overweight
A normal ovulation cycle can only be prevented by taking birth control pills if you are not suffering from any other health issue. Also, several hormonal birth control methods prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg so that a healthy pregnancy can occur.
If you want to plan for a baby while suffering from an ovulation disorder, then you do not need to be dubious about it. With the help of technology and healthcare, you can simply opt for the most popular form of assisted reproductive technology; IVF (In-vitro fertilization), in which the fertilization process takes place outside the human body inside a petri dish when eggs and sperm combine deliberately.
