For half a lifetime
She managed and succeeded
To protect herself
From the fatal cold outside.
Beyond the thick walls
Are the horrors of winter,
The monsters of camouflage, and
The eternal darkness of the night.
When once-
Only once-
A spark of curiosity
Fooled her into bravery,
Bit by bit,
She scraped the concrete
Gratifying her heart with every debris
Great achievement was before her eyes.
Tirelessly, she worked
Until the cold penetrated the walls
Winning over the enemy,
She continued to break her way out.
The hole continued to expand,
She could fit right through
Fear conquered her no more,
And stepped into uncertainty.
That very moment
Both fear and excitement froze on her face
While she stood halfway in and out-
Petrified.
