Robert Frost when said that the woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, I tell you, I felt him deeply. When I read this poem for the first time, I was in grade 7. It didn’t matter if the rest of the poem made sense to me or not, but these lines, I learnt them by heart in one read.
And now, as I grow up, the two roads that diverged for Frost, diverge for me too, and not less often. And I know what he meant when he said that the woods are dark. No textbook explanations. Those woods can mean different things for all of us. I call it my soul. Everything outside it, is cold. Frost said it was chillin' cold at that time of the year. It is. Insecurities, apprehensions, delusions, all these are ice flakes trying to obstruct my energy, to cover it, to try and make it look like every other thing outside.
That won’t change what is inside. And whenever I try and comprehend what it is, I get lost in the reality of it. The complexity, the nudity, the purity of that soul energy (if you ever get to encounter it) is such an effortless emotion. The peace we look for, our whole lifetime, is indeed within us. We chase the tail.
And I know what he meant when he said, that his horse didn’t quite like the idea. Well, I myself, abstain from diving in there sometimes. Because the animal energy (human tendency) is restless. This energy wants to be used, not felt. Our animal instincts give us the drive to push us to our destinations. This energy helps you interact with the world, and pulls you away from your soul energy. It would be a queer thought to many, the thing about these energies. That is how your animal instincts rule you. They love the fun, the frolic, but abstain from the unexplored.
And I know what he meant when he wrote the world famous line about responsibilities. All of us know that. All the energies in the universe, the conjoined forces, they all lead us somewhere. They lead us to where we should be. And while these supernaturals pave our way, all that we are left to, is to carry out and bear our responsibilties. To which, as Frost says, this disillusionment towards the magnetic realms, is a big hindrance.
I can, by no means, disagree.
( The simple mathematics to life is, the quickly you attach, train yourself to quickly detach. Frost was a genius that he could encapsulate such a vivid explanation, in a beautiful language, magical for those who could comprehend, merely pretty poetry art for those who couldn't. )
We should criticize beautiful words that wrap a simple idea but what an irony, we all are poets.
