The Lovers’ Horizon

Info

This is a story about a love that one would have to see to believe,

For it has no mention in the fairy-tales, folklore or mythologies that were penned to deceive.

It doesn’t have a “prince charming” or a “damsel in distress”,

Neither is it about two lovers sacrificing their lives for the sake of their family’s happiness.

It is about two curious souls who loved themselves in ways that were never enough for the world to know,

Both so majestic and blessed with the most unique physiognomies, which they weren't apprehensive about to flaunt and show.

They were both tenacious and rebellious like the stallions in the wild,

While, one lived in the heavenly dome for he was the sole descendant of the celestial dynasty,

The other shimmered from the spherical surface of a planet for she was its untamed child.

The one who resided in the paradise, called himself as Sky,

He’d lure the universe with his azure appearance during the day and adorn himself with luminescent ornaments by night.

And, depending on his mood he’d bring out his much envied artistic side.

With a little help from the blazing Sun, lofty clouds, weather winds, stars and other planets, he would create his “opera d'arte” everyday.

And, knew that he was being noticed by a million eyes from far away.

He seemed a little flamboyant to many from a distance,

Upon a closer look, one realized that it was the only way he could get his lady-love’s attention.

She’s the other soul here, the one that wrapped the spherical planet in her shimmering skin.

Her name was Water.

Coveted by many, she had the spirit of a ferus dragon and the touch of a morning dew.

And, when she’d fall on a surface she’d trickle, tickle and then seep into it because, that to her understanding was the most appropriate way to woo.

A passionate dancer at heart, she’d ballet her way from one place to another.

But, sometimes her dance routines were a little too fierce,

and therefore in those places she was liked by a very few.

She was known by many names - ocean, river, brook, tributary, waterfall and so on.

For she was a nomadic goddess and an enchantress, before whom every creature bowed down.

Knowing the wandering wild spirit that she was, she appeared clear as a crystal in some places and then there were other places where she appeared muddy and grimy.

But, seldom did it ever bother her.

Because she loved herself a little too much to pay attention to her appearances that made some frown and turned others blimey.

She’d roar and splash in wide spaces where she felt liberated; at the same time she’d gently stream into the earth’s lap and instill calmness.

But from the place she lived, she would look up all the time, for there sat Sky in his heavenly throne and he had somehow managed to occupy her heart and mind.

To make sure that he noticed her affection for him, she would take on the colour of Sky’s work of art.

And, then there were times when she would just reflect his face as is, for she wanted him to know that she always kept him close to her heart.

But like every other love story,

this love story saw its moment of sadness as well.

Because, their love was opposed by the lords themselves.

Hailing from the different worlds, they were destined to never meet.

And, if they ever did they would cause an apocalypse and be responsible for their people who would in the battle of the worlds, get killed or profusely bleed.

But history knows better that it’s difficult to keep two people in love apart.

Consequently, there was no way that any one could keep away their beating hearts.

And, so with the help of their confidants they decided to defy the universe’s law and meet to comfort their aching hearts.

During every dawn, the two met at the horizon until the Sun rose completely.

And, stayed away from each other until the dusk arrived.

For it was between the sunrise and sunset when most creatures in both the worlds remained awake.

Minutes before the dusk would set in,

The Sky would display all the hues of love to let the Water know that the time to meet was about to arrive.

Looking at her marmalade Sky, Water would then start to shimmer in joy and shy like a newly wed bride.

Eagerly, the two would wait for the sun to set every day as it was only after that moment when the two would fearlessly fall into each other’s arms and express their emotions that had been tormenting them all day.

Moments after the Sun would disappear,

The two would engage in mushy conversations at the horizon,

In each other’s eyes, they’d find all the love in the world and realize that their love needs no approval or reason.

They’d find themselves crumbling in each others arms,

and made love to each other until it was dawn.

The sight of them making love was hauntingly beautiful, but it was also something that every soul would secretly want.

Soon, it was time for them to separate for it had to begin all over again the next day.

It’d be the unhappiness about the separation that’d make the sky paint hues of red during sunrise.

The mist and the dew that creatures saw in Water’s world, knew that they were nothing but tears that had settled on the surface after trickling down from her eyes.

But, tied down by the Universe’s fate they would let each other go.

With a hope to be in each other’s arms again, they’d kiss each other goodbye and walk away from the skyline, until it was time for them to meet again and immerse in each other’s eyes at the horizon.

Days, years, millenniums and centuries passed.

While, the two managed to live through the ages, they also worked to make their love last.

It’s a love that’s surreal, a love that’s pure, a love so bold that it is hard to ignore.

Which is why lovers in our world find it difficult to take their eyes off the horizon.

Because, that's where the universe's first love-story had begun.
