Chapter 3: Tranquility

The galaxy wrote our story in Helix;
My spirit would surely make it fix.
You brought colours to my tranquil life,
But now I have to keep you away from the desaturated knife.

There was no move for a week ever since Laura revealed her so called dismissal. It was unsustainable for Alex thinking living without her. He couldn’t stop himself from the thoughts of her. Her stereotype eyebrows, playful blue eyes, peering red lips, effigy like hair; he couldn’t keep his soul; away from these thoughts. He had like lost his tranquility. He used to wonder if he could go back to the time and repeal his mistakes which he had not comprehended.

One fine evening, he found himself at the threshold of Laura Mathews. He ringed the door bell, an exquisite lady opened the door to know who’s out there. He asked hesitantly, “Laura Mathews?” “Yes I’m her mother. Please get in,” she said politely. “May I please have a talk with her?” he asked apologetically. “She has been to her friend’s house. She may be here any moment. So, if you wish, you may wait inside,” she invited him. He politely advanced in and took a relief by sitting on a wooden vintage couch. She brought two Royal Albert Empress Isabella cups of tea, and casually asked him, “What is your name, son?” Her words made him melt like wax. He replied with utmost love and respect, “I am Alex from St. Joseph’s boys’ school.” “What does your father work,” she asked. “My father is an architect,” he stated. “Aunty,” he hesitantly called out as they supped tea, “Where is Laura’s father?” “He’s on his bed, asleep. He is advised not to leave the bed for next three months,” she said with a deep voice followed by a tear-pearl fall from her eye. He immediately apologized, “I am sorry.” “No. It’s okay!” she forgave, “He has been miserable since he was injured during the last battle.” “How is he now?” he enquired, as of to meet him. “He is better now. You may meet him. He’s at the door next to the couch,” she suggested as she signaled her eyes towards the door beside the place he was sitting. He exclaimed, “For sure!”

He rushed to the door as he finished his cup. He stopped for a moment at the door keeping his hand on the handle. He slowly opened the door and saw Colonel lying on a big white bed. Beside the bed was a tiny table which held tablets and a deep blue book of his, on which were his spectacles. “Evening Sir,” he greeted as he made the Colonel awake. “Good Evening,” replied him with a deep bass voice which was enough to prove his presence in the army. “I am Alex, Laura’s friend,” he introduced. “She’s not here,” he replied with a well-equipped sound which made Alex forget that he was a patient. “I have actually come to meet you, sir,” Alex sighed as he turned his look towards the badges of the Colonel which were in the showcase. Mr. Mathews looked at him and he too glanced the badges. “Bravery Award,” he grinned, “For the last battle.” “Congratulations,” he impressed, “That is what my dream.” “You said you had come to meet me,” Colonel changed the topic. Alex insisted, “Sir, my dream is to jump into the army and serve my nation as far as I can. You are my role model, sir.” Colonel gazed at the roof over his bed. Appreciating his thoughts, he said, “I am glad, you wish to enter into this field. There would be many fluctuations as you pace up to your goal. But you must never give up. It is one of the most respected works, one can ever imagine. You must be firm at you decisions. Wish you all the best.”

As he spoke these words, a joyful voice narrated, “Good evening dad.” Laura came in while saying it. She got in and silence took over its reign for two minutes. Everyone in the room kept looking at each other’s faces. Laura was unable to believe what she saw. She was about to burst out red, but then she realized the presence of her father. “Here’s your friend,” said Laura’s dad. Laura held Alex’s hand and with her bristling fingers and drove him out of the room. He was dragged out and finally stabled in the living room. She burst out, “Why are you here?” “I have come, not to meet you, but your father,” he replied calmly as he slowly paced to the main door. He wore his shoes and left the house. She kept looking at him from the threshold, speechless.
