Hey, look !
There he is, shoving his mouth full with green leaves
What a glutton !
They remarked.
Sitting silently by the other end of the desk
She watches him carefully,
Counting the notes one by one
She knows he is making money
For his mother with a terminal illness.
Nobody else does.
Oh, what a pity !
She must be in a pathetic state of emotion.
Oh good lord, bless her.
They sympathise.
But he is busy
Watching her from the other side of the glass
Through her skin burnt with acid
He sees the radiance brimming
Admiring her for the love she has for her work
Not out of pity.
There goes the slut !
How could she be ?
Insolent, characterless, rebellious !
They are meant to be whispers but louder
To curse her for her choices
To lose herself so shabbily.
But he remains, undeterred
And to watch her raise another's kid all alone
With pride, he sometimes wishes
If the kid were his.
If only all of us knew
And believed, realised
How the world is too big
For the ill minds to fit in
But too small
For those who should matter
Our lives would be so much better
Knowing that somebody cares
Even though from just the other side of the window!
