The Conversation

She was talking to somebody, I didn't know who

when I asked, she said "oh, I was just praying for you."

I told her I never had anyone pray for me

and she said "how can that be?"

that's the craziest thing I ever heard

I told her I guess nobody ever thought I was worth the words

She got this weird painful look in her eye

and silently began to cry

I asked why?

She said God loves me and that's the truth

I said he doesn't even know me- we've never been introduced

She told me that He made me

And I said then he must hate me

or He's just plain mean

to show me all the things I've seen

And that look returned to her eye

as she continued to cry

So I asked why?

She said that before my date with the grave

that I'd need to be saved

I told her that if it couldn't save me from death

then why waste my breath?

She started another prayer and I told her to stop it

take her prayer and put it in her pocket

or wherever else she'd keep it

until she really needs it.

She said goodbye

and I felt a tear in MY eye

and I began to cry

and I finally knew why...
