The Sins of the Past

Info

“WOOSH”

The wind whispered in my ear as it hit my face. My wings dance with the rhythm of my heart. Swaying with the wind as the darkness started to cover the clear blue sky. I am roaming around the Kingdom of Fairytopia, staring at the busy town underneath me as I sway with the wind. Fairytopia is the land where witches, sorcerers, and other creatures with magic power lives. Fairytopia is ruled by Fairies, the most powerful creatures in Fairytopia that has never ending lives.

It is a strict commandment in Fairytopia that Fairies are prohibited to meddle or marry other creatures in the land except themselves. In our kingdom, Fairies are classified as the social class, the Wizards are the middle class and the Witches and others are classified as the lowest class in our system. There has been a friction and discrimination between this classes for many years to the point that this classes almost separated themselves to the kingdom of Fairytopia.

“Kaia!”

I was interrupted when someone called for my attention and so, I turned around to find Gullveig. He is the man that was betrothed to me by my Grandfather, the King. He is the right hand of the King and the ex-lover of my deceased mother. My mother’s brutal death has been a big mystery to the kingdom because she is loved by the people around her. She was found dead in her room one morning, bathing in her own blood. Her hands tied in her back, a piece of cloth in her mouth to muffle her screams, naked in her bed and her heart was torn apart from her body. But I knew so well.

“Where have you been? The king is demanding for your presence. My love” He said as he came closer.

“Why? Is there something wrong?” I asked worried laced in my voice.

“No, there’s nothing to worry about. The king just wants to talk to us about our upcoming exchange of vows.” He answered as he smiled widely.

“Oh! Okay, let’s head to the palace.” I invited.

Then we both fly to the palace and was greeted by the guards and servants.

“Where could we find the king?” I asked one of the servants.

“The king is in the dining hall right now and is waiting for the both of you, your highness.”

She answered politely. And then, I and Gulleiv headed to the dining hall together. We heard noises coming from the dining hall and it gets louder and louder as we get closer. The two servants who are guarding the door bowed to us before switching the knob open and there I found a bunch of people busily eating and drinking. The ministers of the king, some of my relatives, and Gullveig’s relatives are present in the hall with the king on the head of the table.

“They’re here! My precious Kaia and Gullveig! Join us!” rejoiced the king as he stands to welcome us.

“Ladies and Gentlemen! Let’s welcome my granddaughter and his man Gullveig!” he shouted again and raised his glass to offer a toast to everyone. Gullveig and I took our seats silently as the people around us continue to celebrate our upcoming marriage. As the night crawl by, the visitors started to leave one by one.

“I am heading now, My love” Gullveig said as I nodded in answer and watched him took his leave.

“Let’s rest now darling. You have a very long day ahead of you tomorrow.” My grandfather said referring to the wedding that will take place for tomorrow and kissed me on my temple before he also steps out of the hall.

I decided to head to my room and as I was flying through the hallways, I took a glance inside my mother’s room like I always do. Her room was still the same as it was when she left, the furniture, her clothes were still hanging in her closet, the way she leaves it before she died is still the same except her bed, the sheets were changed to a cleaner one. The silence still envelopes the room like it usually does since that tragic incident. No one dares to step a foot in this room or even lay their eyes on. The unforgivable sin of the past still lives in my heart for all those years and I promise to my parents that I will avenge their death.

“Just wait for mom and dad. We’re almost there” I whispered to myself feeling the rage overcome me.

“I’ll make them pay for what they have done to the both of you, to our family” I whispered again with a smirk playing in the corner of my mouth.

I stood up and walked to the door and exited my mother’s room and slowly walk towards my room and closed the door behind me. After I made sure that the door is locked, I entered my dark room, the room that contains the potions that I made and the cauldron that I use to mix up potions. This is the power that I inherited from my late father who belongs to the witches community. Before he died, he feeds me knowledge about witchcraft and when he was killed, I became more eager to learn more and I taught myself these things, I learned all by myself. Now, I just need to wait for the right time to start my plan and that perfect time is the wedding that everyone awaits.

I watched as the sunrise comes and dominated the sky, hearing the birds sings sweetly as they flew from here to there. I never blinked a sleep even for a second for I am occupied with the thought that today will be the end of it all.

“The tub is ready your highness, Please take a bath so you can prepare for the wedding,” the servant told me.

I nodded in response.

After taking a hot, warm bath I walked out of the bathroom and I motioned my right arm to the direction of the closet and the closet’s door opened. I motioned my arm again towards me and all my dresses and gowns went in front of me. I swiped and swiped my hand to the air as I choose a gown that I will wear for the wedding but as I was swiping the door burst open and there stood 2 fairies, one that has a white flowy gown in her hands, the other holds a small box which I assumed to be the makeup kit.

“The King told us to help you prepare, your highness,” the two told me in unison.

“Oh okay. Come in” I told them and they entered my room.

They started to fix my attire for the wedding, they make me put the dress on, applied makeup to my face and twisted my hair into a bun. They spin the seat that I am seating to face the mirror and I was not able to recognize myself. My heart started to beat wildly like it is going to pop out of my chest.

“Everyone is ready to see you, your highness,” the servant said.

“Okay, I will come down in a bit,” I told them and they stepped out of my room.

I entered my dark room and picked up the bottle of potion that I’ve been working on for so many years. This potion can get everyone to lose their ability to move any part of their body but they can still feel everything that is happening in their surroundings. This potion cannot be opposed by other creatures or even the fairies themselves except by me. I fly out of my bedroom and went straight to the hall where the wedding will take place. I closed my wings and let my feet touch the ground when I was in front of the big oak wooden door.

I inhaled and exhaled deeper as I look at the door.

“The Princess is already here!!” someone shouted from inside and I hear the trumpets roar in recognition of my entry. The door opened and I was greeted with cheers and rejoice of the kingdom's people.

“Hail the princess of Fairytopia!”

They shouted as I took a step towards Gullveig who was standing under the King’s throne, looking at me with a big wide smile on his face. The King is also looking at me with a big smile on his lips as he watches me walking down the aisle. The hall is raining with flying fireflies with different colors that gives so much life to the event. Gullveig and I exchanged vow and headed to the dining hall where the celebration continues.

I grinned evilly as I mixed the potion to the drinks right in front of me and after I made sure that everything was alright, I rushed back to the hall where everyone was.

“My love, where have you been? The King has been searching for you.” Gullveig said but I stayed quiet and follow him to where the King is.

“Everyone, I am very honored and thankful for everyone who is here to witness my granddaughter and my most trustworthy man exchange their vows.” He paused for a second.

“I watched her through all these years and watched her grow into a fine beautiful lady. She has learned many things about ruling a kingdom and I am content to say that I am ready to go down my throne because I know that there are two good rulers who will replace me and will continue what I have started.” The King said with tears flowing down his eyes. The whole dining hall turns quiet as they stare at the King with adoration and respect.

“I am sorry for being so sentimental. We are gathered here to celebrate so, let us continue the celebration! CHEERS FOR THE FUTURE KING AND QUEEN OF FAIRYTOPIA!”

The King shouted and raises his glass of wine. I looked around the hall as I watched the people raised their glass in the air while shouting

“CHEERS!”

I looked at those lovely smiles that show happiness and respect for me and Gullveig. I looked at Gullveig and I caught him looking at me as he takes a sip of his wine like everybody does, while I just stand there looking at them, waiting for the potion that I put on the drink to work its magic.

“TUGS!”

“CLAK!”

The sound of people falling down on their feet and the sound of glasses shattering as it bumps with the floor is the only sound that covered the hall.

“UGHH!”

Their silent screams never go unnoticed to my ears as they lie down the floor. I looked at everyone who is looking at me showing curiosity in their faces as to why I’m the only one who is standing. I looked behind me and I saw my Grandfather looking at me with that same look everyone is giving me.

“HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!” My laughter echoes in the whole room.

“How does it feel?” I asked and looked at Gullveig on my side.

“HOW DOES IT FEEL?!” I shouted at the top of my lungs

Shocked was written in everyone’s face. I laughed harder. I went closer to where Gullveig was and raised my hands on the side and the knife that was laying on the table flies to my direction and came in contact with my hand. Fear, fear is all I saw in Gullveig’s eyes as I walked closer to him. I saw him trying hard to move his body but the potion that I put on the drink is still working. He looks at my Grandfather as if asking for help using his eyes.

“What? You need help?” I asked taunting him. He looked at me murderously.

“No one can help you. No one can save you from me. I have been waiting forever for this moment.” I told him as I raised the knife in my hand and shove it in his heart.

I heard him groan loudly. I can hear sobs coming from the people surrounding us. Gullveig looked at me pleadingly but the anger gets the best of me as I looked at his eyes who are begging me to have mercy on him. All I can see is the eyes of the person who plead this monster again and again to release her but her pleases went into deaf ears and was violated a lot of time.

“You treat her like an animal! You deserve to die!!” I shouted and stab Gullveig again and again and I did not stop until I see his body ripped open. I took his heart with my bare hands and raised it in the air.

“DOOGSH! DOOGSH!”

The roar of the thunder outside the castle can be heard inside the dining hall, it also represents what I feel right now. I am raging. I looked at my Grandfather and I saw him shook with fear, I smiled wickedly.

“My dear, dear Grandfather.” I sing song

“How does it feel being hunted?” I asked, taking slow steps to his location.

“It feels right. Right?” I asked

“I-I’m s-sorry K-Kaia,” he said, almost whisper

“Sorry?! Haha! You are not. You ordered your men to kill my Father! Why? Because he doesn't belong to our class?! Because he is a Witch?!” I asked but he stayed looking at me.

“WHY?!” I shouted in his face and swing my head to the people around us that are looking at me pleadingly.

“All of you! He asked for help! He cried to be free! But what did you all do?! All of you ignored my fathers pleases and let him burn to death. So tell me, why do I need to let all of you live?” I confronted but all I can hear where sobs everywhere. Gullveig’s heart slipped in my hand and dropped on the floor. I covered my ears to stop hearing these people’s cries and turned to the King once again.

“I love you, you know that,” I said as I motioned my hands to his direction and strangle him with my power. I raised him in the air and he started to struggle to breathe. I raised my other hand and motioned to the candle on the table and it flies to my direction and came in contact with my hand. I blow the fire of the candle to his direction and the robe that he wears started to lit up with fire and the fire covered his whole body. He screamed my name but all I can hear was my Father’s pleases to the town’s people as he was burned alive. A teardrop escaped from my eyes as I watch the person who raised me burned to death.

“I’m done now Mom, Dad” I whispered and smiled to myself.

The fire started to crawl to the whole dining hall. I took a last glance at the people of the kingdom and then I spread my wings and fly out of the hall. I spread my wings and spread my hands with the wind swaying my hair, I closed my eyes and the memories flash in my face. The two person who is happily looking at me as I try to fly. I remembered the man guiding my hand as I was trying mix the potions in the cauldron. I remembered how she shook her head in my direction to tell me to not come out when I was hidden in the closet and watched as she gets violated. I remembered how he shook his head to tell me to not come near him when he was being burned. I remembered how they cry for help but no one was there to listen. I witnessed it all, the memories and their cries are still fresh in my mind as if it only happened yesterday.

Another tear slipped down my face and this time I opened my eyes and took the last glance to the busy town underneath me. I inhaled and exhaled deeply before I closed my wings and let myself fall to the ground

“I coming now Mom and Dad” were my last words before everything went black.
