A list of prior things that my mom kept on telling me, that other hardheaded young girls out there bears, too. And of course, this is foremost dedicated to our most persevering moms. Happy Mothers' Day Mommies!
1. "I want you to be like this, I want you to be like that," or "Please do this, please do that, that's the right thing to do."
Girls, claim it, you were once (or nearly everyday) told to be something like this unverbatim. I was, too, and I am still. Admittedly, we'll rant like, "Mom is too seamless. She's so picture-perfect, gosh." But the mainstream reason is, no matter how much it looks unreasonable (for us) and cliché, moms just know what's best. She knows just like everything. Whatever she makes us do, it will never put us at stake. My mom taught me enough how to trust, especially her. Afterall, they won't let anything harm us, will they?
2. "Look at that girl, she's so blah blah, why can't you be like her?"
This is what my mom usually utters everytime she sees a girl at about my age sitting like Maria Clara, or a girl doing household chores, or a girl boning up for an upcoming examination. Moms just keeeeeeep on comparing us to other girls, and there are even times when we'll just huff things like "Right! She's perfect! Why don't you just adopt her? Easy as 123." But the thing about comparing is that, we kept on seeing it as a bad thing when it's actually just one of those "mother-tactics" our young minds wouldn't understand. One thing is for sure, comparing us to other girls sets us off to be better than them, it triggers us to do well. Well, moms are just the best molders that molds us to be the best version of ourselves, huh?
3. "No, you can't go. You're a girl."
Have you ever had a brother? And have you ever asked for going on a trip and got a "no" for an answer just because "you're a girl" while your brother can effortlessly go somewhere, wherever they want? Like, what a lame excuse, so unfair for daughters! You just somehow wanna howl, "I'm a girl, so what? I can walk, I can run, I can handle myself just fine!" But no matter how much you'd ask "Don't you trust me?" You won't fathom how they do trust you but not the people aroud you. For moms, the world out there is too cruel for a treasure like you to be wayfaring around, setting aside how "worried-sickness" is somehow part of their love.
4. "You've got so much to show off! Stop hiding behind the curtains!"
Does this sometimes annoy you? The pressure that your moms kept on putting over your head? Because I do. I hate it when my mom expects too much from me, like, the pressure is all on me and it makes me anxious. Though, she still made me understand that it is her duty to give her biggest support and believe in what I, (and my siblings) can do and how we can also do what we think we can't until we finally believe them, ourselves. Indeed, she's the greatest and the most effective supporter I've ever had that I don't even know how to survive school anymore without her saying, "Go for it! You can make it!"
5. "Never, ever chase a guy, let them pursue you instead."
Above all, this one's my favorite. I love it when my mom gives me life lessons like these. I like knowing how much she had yielded me to be of those higher than status quo. "You're so precious, and don't just let a boy shrug off your sparkle," she routinely says. Moms, I suppose, typically teach us to set our standards so high for we don't deserve just a guy, but a man. Moms, I suppose, reckon about how much a gold costs and that we deserve so much hardwork more than tears. Besides, one thing I learned about my mother; moms, they get hurt twice or thrice more than we are.
I was able to write all of these, because she taught me how to read.
I was able to precise so much words, because she mentored me to use my heart.
I was able to express so much regards, because she showed me how to pay respect, to appreciate.
I was able to carry everything off, all because she taught me how.
I love you, Mom.
Gusto kong kumawala sa pagitan ng lahat ng bagay...
